Hidup harmoni bersama

Tajuk kali ni memang skema habis. Tapi aku suka.

Few weeks ago, I went to Cindy Dental Surgery at Jitra, Kedah to have my teeth diagnosed. During the first session, I was told that I have a wisdom tooth that needs to be removed because it will inflict harm to my other tooth. Therefore, upon realizing the fact that I will continue my study in the States in about a week’s time, I told Dr. Cindy that I need to have it removed as soon as possible. She gently replied that I can have it removed the next day.

A day after that, I went there again and and tadaaaaa! I broke my fast that day because I need to eat few pills before my surgery. Its not just an ordinary tooth removal procedure; instead Dr. Cindy needs cut a little bit of my gum before she can remove the tooth. Phew, what a painful process. Due to the effectiveness of local anesthesia given, I felt only a slight amount of pain during the procedure.

After I had my teeth removed, I wanted to go back immediately because I know I will be in great pain afterwards but I was told by my dad that I have to wait about half an hour for him to fetch me because he was at another place.

While I was waiting for my dad, I had the chance to have short conversation with Dr. Cindy’s daughter. She’s five year old. And she’s cute. She talked in English fluently. After few minutes of conversation, his younger brother told her something in a language that I don’t understand, which is probably Mandarin. Upon hearing that, she immediately told her younger brother to talk in English. Her younger brother followed her order soon afterwards.

Who told her that it is not nice to talk in a language that another person cannot understand while he or she is around that area? I began to wonder. She must be coming from good parenting and environment, I must say. Somehow, this reminds me of Esther and Jenny. They are my good friends and there are few times I went out with them for dinner. One thing that I like about them is they always speak in a language that I understand every time I am around. I really appreciate this value.

Let us understand each other better and learn to be more accepting.

Salam Merdeka.

Select, the in-flight entertainment system. I took a few minutes to know that I actually have a screen to be watched due to the fact that I never sit at front row seats before. I watched Muallaf, Kick Ass, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and played Zuma for a while. Plus, I sent an SMS to my dad, onboard. USD$1.50 for that.

Hidup berfalsafah

[dedicated to Ikram Ali]

P/S:

New students, welcome to INTEC.

nitepost – June 26th 2010

I can’t use the internet at home. Therefore, I need to go a place where I can find internet access, and do my daily routine there. I am in KFC Kuala Perlis now, and they currently have Streamyx Zone! Unexpected things do happen.

“I want to be alone, for a long time.” yeah it is long.

Tomorrow I will meet my SKPBS friends. Like it like it like it.

Nothing else for now. I am internet-deprived.

By the way, Transformers – Revenge of The Fallen, BluRay edition is awesome. Both video and 5.1 Audio. For those who are interested to get in with cheaper price, it is on promotion now (not sure whether it has ended or not). I bought it at Video Ezy for RM 99.90. Cheaper than most titles there.

Those who are searching for “OK laaa” optical cable, you can find one at ALL IT Hypermarket for RM 39.90. Want something ‘monstrous’? Get the same type of cable, Monster brand, from harvey Norman. Really cheap. ONLY RM 195.00. It comes with lifetime warranty.

Do some reading before complaining

Yes we have to. Before we resort to our blog(s) and complain about virtually anything, we need to do a little bit of research (at least) and think (at least) twice.

Today my friend (www.afizzat.com) gave me this link> http://sixfacesblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/streamyx-real-deal.html

The blogpost is about a customer who apparently unhappy with Streamyx service in his area. Throughout his post he continuously blames Streamyx as well as other ISPs in our country for not providing internet service on par with his standard.

Here’s his “two-cents worth”:

image

image

This guy stated that he is using Streamyx 512kbps connection. Okay, Streamyx does offer that package. That is true.

And he put a red round shape around “100 Mbps” in his screenshot. From what I can understand, he was saying the “Streamyx status” is connected at 100Mbps.

He alleges the lying starts when the connection status shows he is connected at 100Mbps while he should connect at 1.0 Mbps. He told his readers that he is using 512kbps connection.

First – 100Mbps connection is merely the connection between his computer and ADSL Modem. The speed of the connection between his modem and the internet DEPENDS on how much the ISP allocates for him (which is 512kbps because he is subscribing to that package now). Therefore, no matter how fast his computer connects to his modem, if he still subscribe the 512kbps package, he will stuck with 512kbps internet speed.

Second – Since he already stated that he is using 512kbps connection, how on earth he expects his “connection” to operate at 1.0 Mbps speed?

Third – Speedtest.net already shows that his connection is 550kbps (download) and 230kbps (upload). Therefore, it can be concluded that his is getting the internet speed that he SHOULD expect, which is 512kbps. In fact, TMNet is being generous by ‘donating’ extra room for his connection (550kbps – 512kbps = 38kbps).

Fourth – His ISP is not lying.

Fifth – Who is lying now?

Moral of the story – if you are a broadband user, make sure your knowledge is as broad as your broadband package. Upgrade you existing dialup mind, if you still have one.

ATU Nite

I just came back from a dinner at Crystal Crown Hotel, Port Klang. We almost lost while going there (it was around 7, and we need to get there as soon as possible), lucky us, we found the hotel, at last.

I was enthralled by the preparations done by the committee members. I only managed to go to the committee meeting once. Usually they have the meetings during afternoon, and I couldn’t be in INTEC because I was taking Stevens design class,at the main campus. Nevertheless, I still follow the developments by asking the committee members, as well as keeping myself up-to-date by reading the meeting minutes and details, sent by KJ / Wei Jie to my inbox.

The hosts are really awesome, and even though some unexpected things happened, they managed to handle the situation while still ensuring the crowd won’t feel left out in the middle of nowhere.

The pride that we have, as an US program students in INTEC. Something that makes us unique, something that can only be found in American program. Deep in my heart, I hope everyone of us will continue to sharpen up our skills as well as polishing the existing talents that we have when we get to the States, or even when we get back and work here.

Many things I want to express about the ATU Nite. I’ll write more on that later.

Annoying people

No, this is not annoying orange. This is about annoying <insert name here>. Talk about Annoying Fauzan. He always annoys people and not everyone likes it. I am Fauzan, Fauzan is me.So, when I try to make friends with people, they might fell annoyed, at times.

Tell me, I don’t mind. Yes it might be painful but I strongly believe that hiding something from your friends when they should know about that is more painful.

Sorry if I ever make you feel annoyed. Also to the person mentioned in the poem before, I’m sorry.

Going abroad, by scholarship.

Last Sunday, N made a statement in local mainstream news, saying that the govt will gradually phase out sponsoring students to study overseas. Controversial, as usual, his statement this time draws mixed reception among people.

I am one of them.

Number of overseas scholarship holders will be reduced

DSC02547

He basically explained two reasons why the govt needs to cut down the number of the students going to study overseas.

1. "The intention is, firstly, to reduce expenditure in sending students overseas.”

2. "Secondly, we must ensure that local universities have bright students. Why are we doubting the quality of local universities?"

Let me be realistic here. the first reason is acceptable. It is understood that there is a bigger need for the govt to spend on some other things apart from sponsoring students to go overseas.

I kind of do not like the second one. Yes, we must ensure that local universities have bright students. However, it does not mean that we are undermining the quality of our very own local universities.

It’s not all about academics

“Their questions are unexpectable” – A, a student there

Going overseas is not just about getting “academic excellence” over there. There are many other things that the students will learn outside of the lecture halls. One of the interesting things is the inner strength. Some of them who have certain dietary requirements, will learn how to adapt with meal plans that are not really tailored for them, i.e a Muslim student stucked with only a few types of food, throughout his years in his university. Besides, the students will learn to be in minority groups, and surviving them without losing their identity. It is something different. Being in a country where people might ask you questions such as “Are you a Muslim? Does that means you are terrorist also?”, “Why are you wearing hijab?”, “If you don’t understand Arabic why you read Koran?” and many more.

We don’t have to answer such questions here. Everyone (should) know the answer. Furthermore, it not something that people will ask you about. There, the situation is different.

Academic-wise: From what I have known, overseas-bound students will be sent to prestigious universities overseas, which is, undeniably, better than what we have in our country. These universities offer better learning environment, resources, people and motivation to study harder (and of course, smarter). Therefore, by hiring the graduates back in govt service sector after they graduate, the country will benefit a lot from them in the long run.

We don’t have what they have over there

It is not that we do not trust the quality of local universities, as the objective of sending students overseas is not to “take them away from local universities”. Spending roughly about half a million ringgit (the cost escalates more for medical students) per student is not just for taking them away in our education system.

Instead, it is hoped that the students will come back to Malaysia and serve the country, bringing in innovative ideas, different style of thinking, renewed mindset, and everything else that they have learned, overseas.

Weakness of the current implementation

One of the weakness in the system now is some of the graduates are not working with the govt after they came back here. While it is also a good thing if they came back and serve the country even in the private sector, the govt must look into this problem, and get all the graduates back to them, at least for several years as stated in the agreement they have signed.

Since the aim of sending them over there is to train them before they come back and serve the country, it is govt’s upmost responsibility to keep them in their sectors, and offer job places for them upon their graduation.

Our privilege, not our right

As far as the brain drain is concerned, we are not sending all of our bright students overseas. You definitely have heard that there are cases of students getting zillions of As and still stuck at local universities. Are they bright? Yes. Are they smart? Yes. Are they academically capable of continuing their study overseas? I think the answer is yes also.

So why they are still studying locally?

The answer is simple. Because not everyone can get a scholarship. For Program Ijazah Luar Negara 2008 (SPM 2007 students), more than 15000 qualified students applied. 15000. Qualified. They are capable. 7000 are called for an interview session. Only 2000 are selected.

What happened to the other 13000 bright students?

They will be scattered throughout Malaysia, at our local universities. They are the ones who are helping our local universities gain recognition, continue to prosper, and setting the trend in Malaysia, specifically of education system.

Getting a scholarship to overseas is not anyone’s right. It’s a privilege.

Those who get the scholarship, don’t ever misuse it. Stick to the agreement, come back and serve the govt (whichever side rules when you came back) as you have agreed to do so. Some people are just frustrated because they couldn’t get the scholarship. nah, it is not the end of the world for you. Post-graduate scholarships are still available.

In a nutshell, the practice of sending students overseas should be continued as there there are many benefits that we (country and people) can reap from it; should the economic downturn prohibits us from doing that, at least, we still need to send some students overseas. However, the practice does not mean that local universities are not competent enough. We have bright students over there and we also have bright students here in Malaysia.
